COYLE & COYLE COMBINED AGE OF 32

Becoming a well respected experienced crew chief for most people takes years of dedicated hard work and for most the hard work over those years may only reap minimal rewards.

Just imagine a young boy who turned sixteen four weeks ago taking over the reigns as crew chief of a 410 Sprintcar team in Western Australia. To most people this would seem a total impossibility and the pressure of such a job would be way too much for most adults let alone a sixteen year old.

Well let me introduce Johno Coyle who just over a week ago did just that, his father Steve who is the team owner and regular crew chief for his other son Kris Coyle has been struck down with an illness that has seen him hospitalized for a week or so.

With the team due to run at Bunbury on the 17th of January  Steve told the guys to take the car and see how things go, Upon arrival Kris and Johno checked out the track with Johno calling the shots with setup and straight out of the blocks Kris set second quickest time in time trials. Fist heat a monumental flip tore the car up fairly bad, a lot of most teams would park the car for the night after such a wreck but by the time the car was brought back to the pit area Johno had front & rear ends, shocks,  bars, arms, wings you name it, all set out ready to go and he then started calling the shots and they got the car back on track for the A main where Kris fought his way up to four place and late in the race he caught a rut and lost several positions finishing seventh.

“We were going good out there but I just clipped a rut the car bounced around and several slipped past, to do what we have done tonight has been awesome” Said a very happy Kris Coyle.

The very next day young Johno had the car stripped and was sending parts here and there to be repaired in readiness for the next weekends big show at the Motorplex 25th January.

With Johno calling the shots again Kris went one better and set fast time in a 35 car field, at the plex, which meant he would start from the rear in both his heats, once the heats had finished Kris had a  fourth and seventh in the bag and started out of six in the A main.

With the slick and unpredictable conditions Coyle did a fantastic job working through lapped traffic to come away with a fifth place.

“I thought we did pretty good again tonight it was hard out there we couldn’t go any higher on the track otherwise we would have been running on top of the fence”.

After the meeting the recently promoted crew chief (Johno) was going about his job packing up the equipment.

“We did Ok things went alright” was about all this amazing sixteen year old said as he walked away with a wry smile on his face.
